It has finally happened. The world has been completely taken over by Pokémon. Pokémon Go has been an unequivocal smash hit, even pulling in players who have never played a Pokémon game in their life. Nintendo’s stock has hit a record high and thousands of people converge on major landmarks hoping to catch rare pocket monsters.
All this hype has led to Legendary Pictures and Nintendo to ink a deal for a live action Pokémon movie. The best part of all of this is that it won’t just be some lame re-telling of Ash’s story, it won’t even be about the much cooler protagonist Red. No Legendary Pictures and Nintendo decided to go for it all and agreed on a movie about Detective Pikachu!
The only way this could fail is if we don’t get a baritoned voice Pikachu.
If you are even vaguely aware of the internet than you probably noticed that Nintendo recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the original Red & Blue versions of Pokémon. While I know Pokémon is still one of the largest franchises in the world, my 4 1/2 year old son loves watching the various series on Netflix, I can’t help but think that Pokómon truly belongs to my generation. We had the original 150. I don’t even consider Mew to be an original that’s how Pokemon OG I am.
Pokémon descended on North America like an atom bomb. There are a handful of gaming events that stick with me, playing Mario in 3D, The first time you heard the soundtrack to Halo Combat Evolved, and being moved to tears by the end of Final Fantasy X. Just to name a few. But Pokemon stands above the rest. It’s not just a singular event that sticks out either it’s a chain starting on Christmas morning 1998. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for a toy. I spent the entire day playing and haven’t stopped since.
I remember the first time I beat the elite 4, the first time I traded and battled with friends, the first time I caught MissingNo. I remember getting up early to watch the show. I joined the local Pokemon club at a KB Toys. I was all in. I loved my Pokémon games and this morning I made a beautiful discovery.
Still in mint condition! I fired them up already and found that I only have 2 hours and 8 Pokemon on the Red Version and no saved game on the Blue Version. I usually use an emulator on my phone to play Pokémon these days but it looks like I’ll have to start carrying my good ol’ Gameboy around again.
Thanks to the partnership of Toonami and Production IG we will get to continue our trippy fever dream of an adventure. The official word is Kazuya Tsurumaki, the stories creator, and other original series creators will be back. They gave us a brief description of what to expect:
“In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.”
To be honest I don’t really know how to feel about this. On the one hand Fooly Cooly is one of my favorite animes of all time, on the other hand revisiting old fan favorites rarely goes well even with the original creator at the helm. Only time will tell.
